About Hotel Baltum

With the tourism boom of the 60s in the Algarve, Hotel Baltum was founded and created in 1968 by the charismatic Teófilo Fontainhas Neto. With his entrepreneurial vision, he believed in and understood that the progress of the Establecimientos Teófilo Fontainhas Neto - Comercio e Industria, S.A.R.L. organisation was linked to tourism. And so Hotel Baltum was born.

Baltum was the name given to the original village by the Romans. It means "embraced by the sea" and this is down to the proximity of the ocean or the lagoon that would form in the lower area of the settlement. Designed in 1968 by the architect Jose Maria Barros, this hotel emerged with magnificent facilities and excellent service areas (launderette, reception and kitchen) as well as guest leisure and wellness zones.
The establishment began its journey with 26 rooms and six suites, all of which were air conditioned with a private bathroom and telephone.

With balanced, attractive décor, this hotel was the leading hotel establishment in Albufeira at the end of the 60s and 70s. It had an annex (Hotel Baltum Anexo) with 23 rooms that was located on a popular street filled with bars.

In 1972, with the effort and dedication of Joaquim Cabrita Neto, a leading tourism expert in the Algarve who was partly responsible for the creation of Hotel Baltum, the establishment increased its size to 53 rooms and added an enormous sun terrace, bar and dance floor on the third floor to offer stunning panoramic views.

For many years this was one of the most prestigious chill-out zones in Albufeira, equipped with every comfort and simple yet sophisticated design ideas. At the time, the new bar added considerable value to the hotel's facilities as the establishment had been a meeting point for locals and foreigners alike for many years, as well as a popular venue for business meetings, work seminars and conferences for large companies.

In 1990, Teófilo Cabrita Neto took over management of the hotel and oversaw an expansion and renovation project, refurbishing the reception, restaurant, bar and rooms. This increased the range of facilities and services available, seeing the hotel gain three-star status and therefore maintaining its excellent standing in the context of local tourism.

In 2014, Hotel Baltum was completely refurbished again in order to continue welcoming guests to a comfortable, refined space.
